Sweetgrass Aboriginal bistro, Ottawa

Sweetgrass Aboriginal Bistro, Ottawa
For lunch today, Asha and I tried this restaurant which emphasized native foods. What that means in terms of menu items is buffalo, fry bread, deer ribs, smoked fish, etc. The restaurant , located just north of the Byward market, is small inside but it has both an inside and outside eating area. We sat on the front porch to look at the people passing by. It’s an upscale place with tablecloths and a lunch wine menu. It was totally not busy though. And no new people came while we were eating.
We ordered a Navajo taco which included a seasoned buffalo meat on a piece of fry bread with lettuce, white cheddar and salsa. It looked great and tasted pretty good. The meat was quite flavorful but it could have used more fresh stuff like lettuce and cilantro or something (but maybe that would be totally not authentic—although the chipotle sour cream is probably not authentic either). Asha ordered the smoked fish cakes which came with a salad with a lightly sweet dressing made from tea (it was too heavily dressed). The cakes were excellent, heavy on the fish with little else to hold them together and a lightly spiced mayo on top. We enjoyed the meal.
The neighborhood is kind of fun too, with a great bakery down the street selling macaroons (Asha had to have a pistachio one which she liked, but it had coconut in it and I don’t like that at all). I ordered a Sable with raspberry jam and a croissant but I haven’t tried them yet.
