Garrison House, annapolis Royal, NS

Garrison House, Annapolis Royal, NS
Garrison house was highly rated and the menu looked good so we thought we’d give it a shot. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize until we were seated that Asha had not put the disk in the camera so we have no pictures of the food or inside, but it was a nice place. It’s in an old Victorian that is also a bed and breakfast. When you walk in, dining rooms are to the left and right and a screen porch is on the side with views to the water. I actually got Asha to sit on the porch. She usually won’t because she gets too cold.
The menu is limited by about 7 appetizers and a similar number of entrees (but they seemed to have ten or more desserts). Four wines are offered by the glass including two Nova Scotia wines, one of which I tried, a Cabernet. It was fine, light but nothing particularly outstanding. Our meals started with a light salad with roasted beets, feta and pumpkin seeds. I asked for it lightly dressed and it was. The salad was heavy on the lettuce which was fine but you couldn’t really taste the beets or pumpkin seeds (is it beet season?). Our mains were a peanut butter thai chicken on basmati rice and a jambalaya with lightly cooked fresh vegetables with no seasoning which emphasized the vegetables.
The peanut butter sauce was rich and creamy and the chicken had the texture of tofu which was very soft. The jambalaya was heavy on the tomatoes (which were clearly canned) but the sausage and shrimp were not overcooked and it was tasty with medium spice. There wasn’t anything fantastic about the food or presentation, however, and I was kind of surprised that it got such good reviews. Maybe I didn’t order the right things.
